Erik Kivisuda (Erik Stoneheart) is a 2022 fantasy film directed by Ilmar Raag, a co-production between Estonia, Luxembourg, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania and Ukraine, released in December 2022. It follows a boy who believes he has a heart of stone into an In-Between-World, and its visual effects were carried out across Ukraine, Luxembourg and Estonia, with the Ukrainian team SnowDog FX handling much of the work.

How the environments were made

Erik Kivisüda sends a young boy, stated to be ten years old by the film's director and eleven in Estonian Wikipedia's plot summary, and a girl named Maria into the Kahevahelmaailm, an In-Between World that the film's plot description places between the living and the dead. Director Ilmar Raag told Sirp that the film's steampunk anime look, partly inspired by Harry Potter, resulted from giving production designer Kari Kankaanpää and costume designer Anu Lensment complete creative freedom to create it. Raag said special effects took up such a large part of the film that computer effects had to be planned during the shoot rather than repaired after, to control post-production cost; cinematographer Ivar Taim was brought on partly for his experience shooting plates for effects work. Producer Riina Sildos described the six country production, shot in Estonia and at Meysembourg Castle and the Filmland Studio in Luxembourg, as technically extremely complex and a big challenge for its effects teams. Chumak worked on the film as a digital matte painter with SnowDog VFX.
