The environment work covered alien worlds and set extensions, developed through the virtual art department and 2D and 3D techniques. Chumak contributed as a senior matte painter.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2, released by Paramount+ in 2023, made heavy use of Pixomondo's LED virtual production and virtual art department, built in Unreal Engine so sets could be walked and lit in VR before shooting. VFX vendors included Pixomondo, Ghost VFX, Crafty Apes, Storm VFX and Cause and FX, the last of which extended the 'Eternal Archives' set into an infinite architectural environment.

How the environments were made

Season 2 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds carries the Enterprise crew through a sequence of standalone episodes. Each episode has its own genre and its own alien world, ship interior, or planet surface, and none of them could be built as a full physical set. The production relied on virtual production technology to project digital backgrounds onto an LED video wall on the Mississauga soundstage, so that each scene's environment could be lit and photographed in camera. For the season, Pixomondo worked alongside the art department to design those backgrounds and set up a dedicated virtual art department. It also contributed traditional visual effects together with vendors including Ghost VFX, Crafty Apes, FX3X, Vineyard VFX, Boxel Studio, Barnstorm VFX and Storm Studios. A zero gravity sequence set inside the destroyed hull of a starship was required for the season finale, calling for digital set extensions for the interior shots and a fully digital exterior. Ghost VFX's Copenhagen studio built the alien environments for the season and the digital version of the Gorn. Chumak contributed as a senior matte painter on the show.
