The environment work built medieval Rus' landscapes, a frontier outpost and the world of an invading stone monster; Chumak contributed as a matte painter with Postmodern.

The Stronghold (Ukrainian: Storozhova Zastava) is a 2017 Ukrainian fantasy adventure directed by Yuriy Kovalyov, adapted from Volodymyr Rutkivskyi's novel, about a modern Kyiv schoolboy sent 1,000 years back to Kievan Rus'. Its CGI and visual effects were produced by the Ukrainian studio Postmodern, and it was well received for its effects quality relative to Ukrainian productions of the period.

How the environments were made

In The Stronghold, a teenager from the present day travels through a time portal into Kyivan Rus and fights beside legendary bogatyrs against Cuman raiders. To create that world, the production combined real Ukrainian landscapes with a large practical set. The portal and forest scenes were filmed at the Dovbush Rocks in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast and the Korostyshiv quarry in Zhytomyr Oblast, and a fortress and a village-on-water set were built from the ground up at Troieshchyna in Kyiv because no existing location matched the story. The final battle posed its own environment challenge. It was shot in three places that were far apart and looked nothing alike, so the VFX team had to rework shots to read as one continuous place. Some of the angles that appear in the finished cut were never filmed at all; those shots had to be rebuilt in 3D closely enough to cut seamlessly against footage shot for real. The Ukrainian studio Postmodern handled the visual effects, and that work received a FICCI BAF Awards nomination in India. Chumak was a digital matte painter on the film.

Questions about The Stronghold

Who did the visual effects for The Stronghold (Сторожова застава)?

The Ukrainian studio Postmodern, credited elsewhere as Postmodern Digital, made the visual effects for The Stronghold. For that work, the studio received a nomination at India's FICCI BAF Awards in the VFX Film (International) category in 2018, along with international titles such as Blade Runner 2049 and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

Where was The Stronghold filmed?

The Stronghold's principal photography used actual Ukrainian locations, among them the Dovbush Rocks near Bolekhiv in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, the Korostyshiv quarry in Zhytomyr Oblast, and the Teteriv Kish eco-centre. Some scenes needed a fortress to be built, so the production also constructed a fortress and a village-on-water set at Troieshchyna in Kyiv.

What VFX problems came up on The Stronghold's final battle scene?

Postmodern's VFX producer Olena Mas said the final battle was captured in three far-apart locations, so the shots had to be reworked to create a sense of geographic continuity. Some angles present in the edit had no filmed source and were reconstructed in 3D closely enough to match the real footage beside them.
