The film's environments built out Carpathian mountain landscapes, forests and a fortified frontier settlement; Chumak contributed as a matte painter.

The Rising Hawk (Zakhar Berkut) is a 2019 Ukrainian-American historical action film directed by John Wynn and Akhtem Seitablaiev, based on Ivan Franko's novella and set during the 13th-century Mongol invasion of the Carpathians. Produced by Kinorob and Cinema Day, it was one of the larger-scale Ukrainian productions of its era.

How the environments were made

The Rising Hawk recounts Ivan Franko's story of a mountain community in the Carpathians that fought off a 13th century Mongol invasion, and the production required a specific landscape the actual Carpathians lack: a valley walled on two sides by towering cliffs, exactly as Franko described. Production designer Vlad Odudenko reported that the crew searched the mountains for a matching gorge and never found one, so the team built part of the valley as a physical set on FILM.UA's outdoor lot near Kyiv and extended the remainder with computer graphics. Visual effects supervisor Vasyl Honcharov said the hardest task on the project was making that gorge look real. The crew also did location filming in the Carpathians near Lake Synevyr in Zakarpattia through the summer of 2018, and that footage had to sit convincingly beside the built and painted gorge. When the story called for a Mongol army bigger than the available riders, the crew digitally duplicated background performers. Chumak is credited on the film as digital matte painter, PostModern Digital.

Questions about The Rising Hawk

Who did the visual effects for The Rising Hawk?

PostModern appears in The Rising Hawk's own production credits as the CGI/VFX studio. On set, Vasyl Honcharov served as the film's visual effects supervisor, handling shots that needed extra crowd size, including digitally multiplied riders used to build out the Mongol army from a much smaller number of actual mounted extras.

Where was The Rising Hawk filmed?

On June 15, 2018, filming for The Rising Hawk began near Synevyrska Polyana, close to Lake Synevyr in the Carpathian Mountains of Zakarpattia, and continued with additional work near Kyiv, where the production built its main sets. The location shoot ran through the summer of 2018 and ended on September 1, 2018.

Why did The Rising Hawk build its mountain gorge instead of filming a real one?

The crew searched the Carpathians extensively, production designer Vlad Odudenko said, but could find no gorge matching Ivan Franko's description: a valley bounded on two sides by high cliffs. No such formation exists there, so the team built part of the gorge as a physical set on FILM.UA's outdoor lot and extended the rest with computer graphics.
