How the environments were made

Chief of War recreates the Hawaiian Islands of the late eighteenth century, a landscape that no longer survives in that form. The production shot the bulk of the series on New Zealand's North Island, using the Bay of Islands to stand in for eighteenth century Hawaii, with additional filming in Hilo, Kalapana and Waianae on the Hawaiian islands themselves. For the Holua sled race, a pivotal sequence, the production needed a mountain that does not exist, so New Zealand studio Cause and FX constructed the route as an entirely digital environment. Within that environment, the sleds moved through volcanic slopes, open grassland and coastal shrub before the riders hit the surf. The only sky visible through the sequence came from a skydome built from drone plates, and digital doubles handled the impacts that live actors could not safely perform. The ocean itself also needed to be extended, with digital water combined with surf footage shot on the New Zealand coast to keep the race's final stretch continuous. Chumak worked as a senior DMP artist on the series.

Questions about Chief of War

Who did the visual effects for Chief of War?

Under Production VFX Supervisor Christopher Scollard, Cause and FX, Ghost VFX, Mavericks VFX, MARZ VFX, Pixomondo and Rocket Science VFX provided the visual effects for Chief of War. During the production's New Zealand phase, New Zealand studio Cause and FX carried out previs, environment builds, digital doubles, ocean extensions and dynamic FX, including the mountain built for the show's Holua sled race sequence.

Where was Chief of War filmed?

Chief of War was filmed across Hawaii and New Zealand. Principal photography started in Hawaii in late October 2022, with shooting in Hilo, Kalapana and Waianae, before the production moved to New Zealand's North Island. There, the Bay of Islands stood in for eighteenth century Hawaii, and filming of battle sequences continued into December.

What environment work did Cause and FX do for Chief of War's sled race?

The New Zealand studio Cause and FX constructed the mountain used in Chief of War's Holua sled race as an entirely digital environment, collaborating with the episode director to form volcanic slopes, grasslands and coastal shrubs that follow the sequence's rhythm. The same team also produced a skydome using drone plates, generated digital doubles for the riders, and lengthened the ocean footage filmed on New Zealand's coast.
